Gemotions

The chipped mug trembled in Leo's hands. Steam curled upwards, carrying the scent of chamomile, a scent that usually soothed him. Tonight, it felt like a mocking reminder of calm he couldn’t find. His roommate, Mark, was sprawled on the couch, headphones blasting music, oblivious to the turmoil brewing in Leo's chest. Leo had just pitched the idea of adopting a cat, a fluffy Persian named Princess Fluffernutter. Mark had shot it down immediately.

He squeezed his eyes shut, picturing Princess Fluffernutter’s emerald gaze. The thought of not having her, of not getting to bury his face in her luxurious fur, made his stomach clench. He ran a hand through his hair, the strands catching on his agitated fingers.

“Mark,” he began, his voice barely a whisper, “can we… can we talk about it again?” He knew, logically, it was pointless. He just needed to try.
