The silence in the apartment was deafening, amplified by the ticking clock on the wall. Sarah picked at a loose thread on the sofa, her gaze fixed on the frayed fibers. Her roommate, Emily, had declared she wanted a ferret. Sarah, a self-proclaimed neat freak, envisioned a tiny, playful tornado wreaking havoc in their meticulously organized living space.

She felt a coldness creeping into her bones, making her want to huddle under a blanket, even though the apartment was warm. Her pulse quickened with each tick of the clock. Emily was humming in the kitchen, completely unaware of the internal battle raging within Sarah.

“Emily,” she finally blurted out, her voice a strained whisper, “Are you…are you sure about this?”
