David found himself staring at a blank screen. He had built this whole scenario in his head, he imagined the perfect time, the right words, the ideal way to meet up with Emily. He knew their shared past, but he had no idea if it mattered. The thought alone churned inside him.

He saw her across the crowded street, waiting for the crosswalk. He walked towards her, his footsteps heavy. He swallowed, attempting to clear his throat.

"Emily?" he asked, the word sounding alien in his mouth.

She turned, her expression guarded. Her eyes scanned his face, registering no spark of recognition. He felt an intense wave of nausea well up inside him.

“Yes?” she responded, her voice tight.

"It's David," he mumbled, feeling foolish. "David from… middle school."

She frowned, shaking her head. "I don't remember you." She spoke quietly, but the words cut him to the quick. She turned away, waiting for the light to change. He stood there, frozen. The world swam. He felt like he had been dropped into an abyss.
