The silence in the small cottage felt suffocating. The email was open on the laptop screen, a bright, accusatory window into her failure. She felt a familiar knot forming in her throat, making it difficult to swallow.

She’d envisioned this moment a thousand times, picturing the editor's praise, the celebratory phone calls, the book tour. Now, the dream had dissolved into a bitter reality. The silence became almost unbearable.
