The silence of the library was unnerving, broken only by the rustle of the old photographs. David ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He felt a rising panic. His grandfather, the man who’d told him tales of hardship and selflessness, was grinning in a group photo with known gangsters.

He closed his eyes, his breath hitching. The weight of this revelation was crushing. The stories he had grown up with, stories of integrity and honor, were being replaced with something far more complicated, something far less certain.
