"This can't be real," Sarah whispered, her voice catching in her throat. She held up the photographs. Her grandmother, the woman who had always embodied grace and serenity, was caught in candid shots, smoking and laughing with a group of friends. The photos were in stark contrast to the quiet life she had always described.

A shiver ran down her spine. The woman she thought she knew, the woman she loved, was a stranger. The knowledge sat like a stone in her stomach, heavy and cold.

She dropped the photos, the sound of the falling paper amplified in the silence of the room. She felt sick. She felt a need to break something.
