Gemotions

“I don’t understand,” Maria murmured to herself. The email refused to make sense. It was all a blur, a collection of meaningless jargon. Her hands were clammy, her heart was pounding in her chest like a trapped bird. Her face felt hot, flushed. She felt as though she might simply fade away.

She pushed her chair back from the desk, abruptly. The sudden movement sent a sharp pain through her lower back. She winced. The ache was nothing compared to the turmoil bubbling inside her. She stared at the window, not seeing the familiar cityscape outside, lost in a whirlwind of thoughts and anxieties.

She thought of her dreams, the ambitions she had nurtured here, the life she had built. All of it now felt uncertain, threatened. A cold sweat broke out across her forehead. She felt a profound sense of isolation, of being utterly alone.
