The small apartment felt like a cage. Her phone lay on the floor, discarded, a silent testament to her blunder. She’d meant to text her friend, letting out her frustration about her disastrous date: "He's the worst." The text went to the date himself.

She buried her face in her hands, the rough fabric of her sweater scratching her skin. She remembered his face, the smile that had turned to a frown. She pressed her fingertips into her temples.

She imagined his reaction. She felt the blood rush to her face. She closed her eyes. This was the worst thing that had ever happened to her. She wanted the earth to swallow her whole.
