David’s hands trembled as he typed a response to the email. He’d received the news that afternoon and immediately retreated to his office. He tried to focus on his work, but his mind kept wandering, replaying the conversation he’d had just last week with Dr. Olsen, planning for the coming semester.

He closed his laptop with a snap. The screen had been reflecting his own pale face back at him. He felt restless, unable to sit still. He stood up and began pacing the small space, his steps quick and erratic. He felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. He was not sure he would be able to finish his project.
