John felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. He slowly lowered the notice, his hand trembling. His mouth went dry, and he had to fight back the urge to retch. He felt like someone had punched him in the gut.

He sat heavily on the edge of the bed, the familiar springs groaning under his weight. He looked around the room, each piece of furniture a tangible piece of his life, a reminder of what he could lose.

He picked up a framed photograph of his daughter, his vision blurring. He squeezed his eyes shut. What was he going to do?
