The harsh fluorescent lights of the storage unit cast long shadows across the forgotten belongings. Liam held the draft letter of resignation, the words a jagged line across the page. His father, the man he had always admired, had apparently been deeply unhappy. His breathing grew shallow.

The letter was laced with a bitterness he never knew his father capable of. The words stung. A cold wave washed over him. He felt as if he had been struck. He felt a tightness in his chest.

He wanted to tear the letter to shreds, to erase the truth. He closed his eyes, his head swimming. He opened them and re-read the letter. He felt his legs tremble. He hated this discovery.
