“Well,” Ethan said, his voice flat, emotionless. He felt a strange detachment, as if watching a play from a distance. A coldness settled in his stomach. He didn't want to show it.

He pushed his chair back from the table. The half-eaten pizza suddenly repulsed him. He stood up, his movements stiff and deliberate, as if controlling an automatic doll. He had to keep moving.

He walked to the window, staring out at the rain-streaked glass. The familiar view, usually a source of comfort, now felt sterile, empty. The thought of the future without him was like a black hole sucking everything in.
