The ornate study was stifling, the heavy drapes blocking out the sunlight. Liam shifted in his seat, the leather creaking beneath him. His sister, Chloe, sat beside him, her usual vibrant energy dimmed, her eyes fixed on the lawyer. He felt a tightening in his gut, a knot of anxiety that refused to unravel.

The lawyer, a portly man with a perpetually worried expression, adjusted his glasses. "The will… is not what you might expect."

Liam braced himself. He had no idea what to expect.

“Chloe, you inherit the family’s island retreat, including the house and all its contents.”

Chloe’s eyes widened, a flicker of something that could have been excitement or something else entirely. She had always loved the island.

“And Liam, you receive… the family’s collection of ancient manuscripts.” The lawyer’s voice was almost apologetic.

Liam stared at him, a cold dread washing over him. Manuscripts? He'd always hated history. The weight of expectation, the responsibility for something he knew nothing about, slammed into him like a physical blow. The elegant room seemed to shrink, the silence pressing down on him, suffocating him.
