Rain lashed against the windows of Mrs. Gable’s apartment, mimicking the frantic drumming in her chest. She crumpled the rejection letter again, the paper making a harsh, tearing sound in the otherwise quiet room. Another application denied. Another door slammed shut. Her teaching career, once so promising, felt like it was crumbling around her. She slumped onto the worn sofa, the floral pattern seeming to mock her weariness. The doorbell chimed, a cheery sound that grated on her frayed nerves.

A small, neatly wrapped package sat on her doorstep, tied with a bright yellow ribbon. No return address. Cautiously, she brought it inside, the weight of it surprisingly substantial. Inside, nestled amongst tissue paper, was a hand-carved wooden bird, its wings outstretched in a silent, hopeful flight. A note, written in familiar, looping script, read: "Soar, Mrs. Gable. You always told me I could." It was signed, "Ethan, your hopeless student." A wave of heat flushed her face, and her eyes prickled.
