The flickering fluorescent lights of the hospital waiting room swam before Amelia's eyes. She kept twisting the silver ring on her finger, the metal biting into her skin. Each rotation sent a fresh wave of unease crashing through her. The air tasted stale, thick with the scent of antiseptic and fear. Her breaths came in ragged gasps, her chest constricting with every inhale. “Next,” a voice finally announced, pulling her from her spiral.

The doctor’s office was sterile and cold, but it didn't feel as unwelcoming as the waiting room. Dr. Chen, his face etched with concern, explained the test results. Something about a rare genetic anomaly, a condition called “Chrono-Dysplasia.” Amelia listened, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The words barely registered. Her world had tilted.

“It’s very unusual,” Dr. Chen continued, “We’ve only seen one other case in the last decade, and she was in her eighties.” He paused, consulting his notes. “Actually… her name is…” His voice trailed off, “She’s waiting in the consultation room next door.”
