The essay, "Beneath the Surface," was plastered on the college's website. Michael felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead. His carefully constructed narrative, the one he had hoped would open doors, now felt like a cage.

He rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hand, trying to clear his vision. The words danced on the screen. He felt a pressing pressure in his chest.
