The coffee cup trembled in Mark's hand. He stared at the book, the author’s name - a woman he’d never heard of - staring back at him. It recounted his struggles with his father, the career setbacks, his fleeting romances. Mark closed the book, then slammed it shut. He walked to the window and stared out at the city, the lights reflecting in his watery eyes. He felt a hollowness, a sense of having been dissected under a cold, bright light. The world seemed suddenly foreign, the people around him strangers with secrets he didn’t understand.
