Clara felt a knot tighten in her throat as she saw Daniel, her ex, standing near the dessert table. The sight of him, so casually dressed and laughing with friends, felt like a violation, a reminder of the life they'd almost shared. She felt a deep, pervasive sense of unease. She found herself subconsciously straightening her dress, as if that could somehow shield her.

Her appetite vanished. The sight of the elaborate cakes and pastries, once appealing, now made her feel nauseous. She forced a smile, but it felt strained and brittle. She tried to focus on the conversation she was having, but his presence was a heavy weight on her mind.

The room seemed to spin slightly. She excused herself, needing to move, to do something, anything to escape the oppressive feeling of being watched. She made her way towards the bathroom, hoping for a moment of quiet, a chance to collect herself.
