The phone vibrated in Emily’s hand. It was a text from Jake, inviting her to dinner. She stared at the message, her brow furrowed. Earlier, she'd discovered Jake wasn't a doctor, as he had so proudly proclaimed. He was a medical scribe. A wave of icy dread swept over her.

She felt a tremor run through her. The world seemed to tilt slightly. She usually looked forward to their dates, but now the thought of sitting across from him, knowing the lie he lived, filled her with a profound weariness. She needed air. She tossed her phone aside and paced her apartment.
