The ringing started late at night, and always when they were in bed. He would be out of bed and in the hall before she even had a chance to ask who was calling. Michael would return to bed, cool and collected, as if nothing had happened. Amelia couldn't shake the sensation of being watched.

The silence in the bedroom, now, felt oppressive. She stared at the ceiling, the darkness pressing in. She pulled the covers tighter, seeking some form of comfort. It didn’t arrive. His presence beside her, usually a source of warmth, now felt like a cage.

She got up and walked to the bathroom, her reflection in the mirror alien. The image she saw was not her own. The woman staring back at her was a stranger, with eyes wide and haunted.
