He found them tucked away in a trunk in the basement, beneath a pile of moth-eaten quilts. Mark, his hands trembling slightly, flipped through the brittle pages. His mother’s neat, cursive script filled the margins of a history essay on the Roman Empire. He'd never known her to have any interest in ancient civilizations. A lump formed in his throat.

He sank down onto a dusty crate, the air heavy with the scent of mildew and decay. Each assignment was a ghost, a fragment of a life he never truly knew. A poem about a lost kitten, a science project on the solar system, a clumsy attempt at a self-portrait. They were too revealing, too vulnerable.

Mark ran a hand through his hair, a wave of nausea washing over him. The intimacy of it was overwhelming. He felt a desperate urge to close the trunk, to shut out these intimate revelations, as if the contents held a dangerous secret. He stood and retreated back upstairs, unable to bear the weight of these relics.
