It was the sudden cancellation of her health insurance that set off the alarm bells. Maria had called the insurance company, and the curt agent had read out a list of pre-existing conditions she didn't possess. The world suddenly spun.

She walked the streets, feeling exposed and vulnerable. She kept looking over her shoulder, convinced she was being followed. She could feel every heartbeat, racing and irregular.

She tried to find solace in her art but couldn't focus. The canvas stared back at her, a blank and accusing void. The paints felt heavy in her hands, her once vibrant colors now seeming dull and lifeless.
