The notification pinged, and Amelia’s hand flew to her chest as if she had been physically struck. Michael Davies. He’d been the reason for so many sleepless nights, so many tears. Her jaw clenched. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, like a thousand tiny needles.

She stared at the request, the image of his face, older but still…familiar. She glanced at the clock, the seconds ticking by with agonizing slowness. She thought of calling her sister, but didn't. Her fingers twitched.

She closed her eyes, willing the sensation to pass, but the unease only intensified. The room felt suffocating.
