The message, brief and impersonal, crackled through the speakers. He stared at the glowing screen, the words a cold slap across his face. He'd poured his heart into the preparations, meticulously planning every detail. The feeling in his stomach was akin to freefalling, his breath hitched in his throat. He went to the fridge and grabbed a beer, the metal cold against his skin, a meagre consolation in the face of what had happened. He twisted the cap off with a force that far exceeded what was needed.
