The phone call had been brief, filled with hushed tones and nervous laughter. Sarah had hung up quickly, her face flushed, and immediately begun preparing dinner. It was a meal she had never cooked before.

Later, as they ate, she kept glancing at him, a strange, hesitant smile playing on her lips. It was then he noticed the subtle changes in her speech, the inflections that were new and unfamiliar.

“What’s… what’s with the fish?” he finally asked. The meal was too heavily spiced.

She shrugged, avoiding his eyes. "Just trying something new." The way she said it, it sounded like a challenge, like a dare.

He felt a sudden and powerful urge to push his plate away. This meal felt like some elaborate, strange trap.
