The sign in the window hit her like a punch to the gut. “Closed for Renovation.” She read it again, willing the words to change, to rewrite themselves. But they didn't. They mocked her. The 'renovation' was a euphemism, she knew it in her heart. "Luigi's" – her haven for decades.

Her mouth went dry. Her hands clenched into fists at her side, nails digging into her palms. She felt a wave of anger, followed by a profound sense of loss. She felt betrayed. She’d always found comfort in the familiar faces, the aroma of tomato sauce, the warmth of the small dining room.

She stood there, paralyzed, watching the bustling street scene continue around her as if nothing had happened. She felt utterly alone, isolated by the knowledge that her special place, her source of comfort, was gone. She felt a deep ache in her heart.
