The restaurant was buzzing with chatter, but all Chloe could hear was the frantic pounding of her own heart. Across the table, Mark was telling a story, laughing. She was distracted by a photo she’d seen. A photo of him with someone else. A woman with dark hair and a similar sparkle in her eyes. It was a picture of familiarity and love. A love he had been sharing with her.

She had to focus on the story but found herself fidgeting with her silverware.

She cut the steak she had ordered into many, tiny pieces.

She excused herself and went to the bathroom, staying there for a long time.

She decided to leave.
