"You got the email?" Her sister’s voice on the phone crackled. Sarah said nothing, only let out a small noise of acknowledgment. She’d been staring at the screen for an hour, the information refusing to settle. It was like she had swallowed a rock.

She walked out into her garden, the roses she'd carefully cultivated suddenly vibrant and mocking. The blooms seemed to jeer at her, their beauty a cruel contrast to the chaos inside. The air felt heavy, oppressive. She felt the urge to destroy something, anything.

She ripped up weeds, pulling them out with brutal force, her nails tearing the soil. Her knuckles were raw, her hands smeared with dirt. Still, she couldn't quiet the churning inside. The earth beneath her feet felt unsteady.
