"The results are in." The simple phrase on the screen felt like a condemnation. Jessica stared at the list of names, unfamiliar and jarring. The warm familiarity of her life was gone. She felt a profound sense of disconnect.

She found herself driving for hours, aimlessly, the road blurring before her eyes. The car felt like a metal coffin. She pulled over at a gas station, went inside, and threw a candy bar on the counter, the clerk seeming to stare at her with an uncanny gaze.

Back home, she stood in her bedroom, a place of peace, and it now felt like a prison. She ripped the photos off the walls. The absence of the pictures, the stark emptiness of the walls, brought no relief. The weight in her chest remained, heavy, immovable.
