"It's just a necklace, Liam," his mother had said, her voice unusually flat. The emerald pendant, his grandmother's, felt heavy in Liam's hand when he tried to touch it. He clenched his fist. His heart thudded a painful rhythm against his ribs.

He watched her carefully, the way she paced the living room, a nervous energy radiating from her. Her usual bright smile was absent, replaced by a strained expression. Her eyes darted around, avoiding his. Why?

He couldn't meet her gaze. The thought of the necklace, its history, its significance, being traded for cash made a sour taste erupt at the back of his throat. He felt the blood drain from his face, leaving him feeling lightheaded. He wanted to scream.
