"I need the money," his sister said, her voice thin, as she held up the painting. It was a landscape, her grandmother's work, that had always hung in the dining room, a silent witness to countless family dinners. He stared at it, the colors muted and faded, now a source of conflict.

He felt a deep sense of wrongness, an internal conflict. He wanted to argue, to plead, but the words wouldn't come. He felt a throbbing ache in his temples, a pressure behind his eyes. He felt a profound sense of loss, a fear of what was to come.
