"This can't be happening," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her knuckles were white from gripping the edge of the desk. The scholarship, the key to her dreams, now a closed door. She imagined her parents' faces when she told them. A knot formed in her stomach. She slammed her laptop shut with a loud crack, the sound echoing in the silent room. She couldn't focus on her studies. The words on the page blurred. She ran her fingers through her hair, needing to escape the confines of her room.
