The silence of his apartment amplified the hollow ache within him. He kept replaying the scene in his mind, over and over, the way his friend, Chloe, had looked at him, confused, when he brought up their summer camping trip. It was as if a part of her was missing, a missing piece in the puzzle of his past. He wandered from room to room, touching things they had shared. He picked up a worn photograph, his hands shaking. The image, once a source of comfort, now felt like a cruel joke. He tossed it onto the coffee table, a sudden, angry gesture.
