He stared at the blank screen of his laptop, the cursor blinking, a mocking reminder of his inability to start. The speech was due tomorrow. He should be writing, preparing. Instead, he was frozen, immobilized by a wave of something that felt like a nameless fear.

Every memory of his parents felt distorted, refracted through a lens of unspoken resentment. The forced intimacy of the party felt overwhelming, claustrophobic. He felt a deep desire to be anywhere but there, but the sense of obligation was a lead weight.

He slammed the laptop shut and went to stare out the window, watching the rain beat against the glass. He felt like he was drowning in a sea of unspoken emotions.
