David, a man of routine, was cleaning out his desk. He found an unsent letter addressed to his late wife. He should have known. It was so unlike her to let an important correspondence go unfinished.

His pulse quickened as he read the words, a raw testament to a buried desire for children, a secret pain that had festered in the shadows of their marriage. The silence of the room was deafening.

He lowered himself into his chair. His hands shook as he set the letter down. It was almost as though a hole had been punched in him.
