Gemotions

The world seemed to tilt on its axis when the sheriff handed her the notice. Her vision blurred, and the words swam before her eyes. She gripped the worn strap of her purse, her knuckles white. She mumbled a thank you, the sound barely audible, and stumbled back inside, shutting the door with a loud thud. Alone. She felt a wave of icy air wash over her, despite the stuffy apartment. The air felt thick, heavy, as though she were submerged underwater. She stood there, frozen, the paper a burning brand in her hand.
