The vibrant colors of her living room, once a source of comfort, now seemed garish, oppressive. The eviction notice sat on the table, a stark white intrusion in the carefully curated space. She couldn’t bring herself to touch it. Her breath hitched. She got up and walked to the stereo, putting on her favorite record, but the music grated on her ears. It was too loud. She turned it down, then off. The silence was worse. She sank back into the chair, the plush velvet offering little solace.
