The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the room. He barely registered the change in light. The eviction notice lay on the kitchen table, a dark stain against the worn wood. He hadn’t eaten all day. He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling. Every muscle in his body felt tense. He had to do something, anything. He pushed away from the table, pacing the confines of the small space, his thoughts a chaotic jumble. He felt a mounting sense of panic he couldn’t articulate.
