"Look at this," Mark muttered under his breath, staring at the collapsed tree. His jaw tightened. He should offer to help, shouldn't he? Mrs. Davies was probably a mess. But the thought of getting involved, of wading through the debris, felt like an insurmountable obstacle.

He backed away slowly from the window. The knot in his stomach tightened. He wanted to scream. He took a deep breath, trying to regain control. He went to the kitchen and made himself a cup of coffee, then left it there, untouched. He felt trapped in his own house. Everything felt too bright, too loud. He grabbed his keys and drove around the block. Anything to get away.
