The phone rang, shattering the quiet of the small apartment. Sarah hesitated before answering, a knot forming in her stomach. It was her brother. "I got a letter," he said, his voice tight. "From... her." Sarah didn't need him to say the name.

She leaned against the kitchen counter, the ceramic cold against her back. The sudden reawakening of emotions was a heavy weight. She knew the letter was an attempt to heal, but it felt more like a fresh wound.

After they ended the call, Sarah found herself wandering through the apartment, touching things, as if trying to ground herself. The silence after the call made the hairs on her arms stand on end. She found herself staring at an old photograph, a picture she had held, had forgotten.
