He stared at the letter, its contents a betrayal of the past. A simple apology could not fix what was broken, could not erase the years of regret. He felt a deep sense of wrongness, a sense of having the very foundations of his beliefs and identity shaken.

He began to clean. He scrubbed the floors, washed the windows, and organized his belongings. He was lost in the chaos of his mind and needed to anchor himself in the physical world.

The house grew brighter, cleaner, but the feeling of unease remained, a shadow lurking in every corner. He would eventually get around to shredding it.
