"So, you got the house and all its contents?" Beatrice asked, her voice tight. Her brother, Arthur, nodded, gesturing expansively at the lavish, newly-renovated mansion. She, however, was bequeathed a single, plain wooden box.

She opened the box. Inside, was a handful of dirt, some seeds, and a faded note. The words were simple, yet she understood what was intended.

She felt a hollowness inside her, a deep void that threatened to consume her. She closed the box again. A cold sweat erupted across her back.
