The basement felt colder than usual. Sarah hunched over the list, the dim light struggling to illuminate the faded ink. “Go to Italy.” “Learn to bake bread.” “Make peace with the past.” The last item, underlined with a flourish, sent a shiver through her. She hugged herself tightly, as though warding off a physical blow. The air around her seemed to vibrate with a silent pressure. Her eyes darted around the cluttered space, seeking an escape, a reprieve from the unnerving truths contained on the page. She felt utterly alone.
