The pristine white paper felt like a betrayal. "Adopt a dog." "Learn to paint." "Find happiness." These simple aspirations, penned in her mother’s elegant hand, felt like a condemnation of her own existence. She dropped the list on the kitchen table, the sound a sharp, decisive thud.
