Mr. Bell found a package on his porch, a neatly wrapped box tied with a black ribbon. He knew instantly who it was from, despite the lack of a return address: David Chen. David had been a brilliant, yet troubled student, always teetering on the edge.

He hesitated before picking it up. He was sure something unpleasant was inside. He took a deep, shuddering breath and brought it inside, placing it on the kitchen table. He was suddenly overwhelmed with an urge to flee. He stood in the middle of the room. He looked at the box.

He didn't open it.
