A simple, silver locket arrived in the mail for Ms. Jones. She knew who it was from, despite the sender’s silence: Daniel, a student who always wore his heart on his sleeve and now was known for his social media posts. The locket was engraved with her initials.

She held the locket up to the light, her hand trembling. She quickly snapped it open. Inside, was a tiny, faded picture of herself. She slammed it shut.

She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. She threw the locket across the room, and it clattered on the floor. She sat down, breathing heavily, feeling a mounting feeling of apprehension.
