The rain hammered against the windows as Michael sat at his kitchen table, staring at the pages before him. The novel, his partner, Chloe's novel. It detailed their life together, but through a filter of…something. Something that made his skin crawl.

He'd always believed he knew Chloe. But the character she wrote, that echoed him, felt like an imposter. The character had his name, his job, even his mannerisms, but the core of the person – that was distorted, twisted.

He felt a chill, despite the warm room. He closed the book, the metallic tang of fear clinging to his tongue. He was utterly, completely, off-kilter.
