“Become fluent in Italian.” The list was tucked inside a book, a love letter to a life she hadn’t mentioned. He felt the blood drain from his face. His heart hammered against his ribs. It was as if a stranger had taken up residence in his home.

The air in the room felt thick, heavy. He couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, of being lied to. He felt a creeping dread, something he could not name. He felt the urge to destroy the list, to burn it, to erase the evidence.

He found himself wandering aimlessly through the apartment, as if looking for something he couldn't name, some hint of the person he thought he knew.
