The aroma of freshly brewed coffee did nothing to soothe the turmoil. Sarah had been enjoying the quiet tranquility of her morning routine when the chime of the doorbell interrupted the peace. Standing on her porch was Mrs. Klein, her neighbor, with a smile that felt forced and expectant.

"I was wondering if I could…," Mrs. Klein started, her voice trailing off as she gestured towards the side of the yard. Sarah's breath caught in her throat. The idea of shared use was anathema, a complete violation of her sanctuary. She began to wring her hands, her fingers twisting into knots.

“I… I don’t think so,” she finally managed, the words a choked whisper. Mrs. Klein’s smile wavered, and she began to stammer an apology. Sarah barely registered it, as she swiftly closed the door, turning the deadbolt to re-establish the barrier. She moved to the kitchen window and watched until Mrs. Klein had disappeared from view.
