The gallery owner, Mr. Abernathy, had that nervous habit of adjusting his tie. It always signaled a problem. I sipped my lukewarm tea, the porcelain cool against my fingers. Sunlight, pale and weak, slanted through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He cleared his throat. "There's something...regarding your piece, 'Ephemeral Echoes'."

He led me to a small back room, a storage space usually cluttered with forgotten canvases. There, leaning against a wall, was a woman. Her arm, bared, displayed the intricate, swirling lines of my painting, rendered in perfect, permanent ink. My breath hitched. It was undeniably my work, every curve, every shadow. I felt a curious lack of resistance, a gentle acceptance of the situation.

"She… requested it," Abernathy mumbled, his tie now askew. The woman smiled, a small, tentative thing. "It's… beautiful," she whispered, her voice barely audible. I nodded slowly, unable to form a response. The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken things.
